| SYMPTOMS
OF SIATICA Siatica pain is really a set of symptoms with a number of different causes, hence the symptoms vary greatly according to the cause. In detail the symptoms are: LEG PAIN This is the main symptom of sciatica so you have to have leg pain for it to be called siatica. Where you experience leg pain depends on the specific cause. It can be a dull ache, shooting pain or tingling sensation in any part of the leg. Common patterns include pain down the front, side or back of the thigh, pain in the lower leg only and pain in various parts of the ankle or foot. If the pain is caused by a prolapsed disc then the pain tends to follow specific patterns depending on the location of the prolapsed disc, sometimes it is possible to get comfortable in a particular posture or position, often the buttock pain is more severe with this type of siatica. If the pain is primarily muscular in origin then the pain tends to be less focussed in one area and to move about more. BUTTOCK PAIN It is very common in siatica to have pain in one buttock on the same side as the leg pain. If the siatica is caused by muscular tightness then the buttock pain can be prominant. BACK PAIN It is very common to have back pain with siatica, but not always. Lower back pain with siatica tends to indicate that the problem is coming from the back rather than muscular in origin. Upper back pain in not usually related to siatica. |
